Surely you have heard about the famous underwater museum of Lanzarote.

  • It has been created by Jason deCaires Taylor.

  • He made the world's first underwater museum in Grenada.

  • He also has some sculptures in the Museo Subacuático de Arte (MUSA) in Cancún, Mexico.

  • The Museo Atlántico de Lanzarote is Europe's first underwater museum located in Playa Blanca, in the area called Las Coloradas.

  • It was inaugurated in 2016 and was managed by the Centros de Arte, Cultura y Turismo de Lanzarote until 2019.  Now the entrance is free.

  • It is 12 meters deep, and it is necessary to dive with a boat, although it is a very easy dive.

MUSEO ATLÁNTICO
LANZAROTE

Take a tour around the sculptures of the Museo Atlántico de Lanzarote.

Such an interesting dive.

But it is even more interesting if you know a bit about the sculptures' meaning.

That's why we tell you about them here.

1. Los Jolateros.

"Los Jolateros" reflects a tradition of the island.

The children of Lanzarote, who did not have many resources, used to play at making oil drums into boats.

They painted them and then used them to race in the San Ginés puddle.

2. Immortal.
This sculpture is a funeral pile and refers to the tradition of cremating the deceased on the islands.

4. La Balsa de Lampedusa.

Based on the painting "The Raft of Lampedusa" by Théodore Gericault. It depicts a raft with 13 migrants on board that reflects on the current refugee crisis,

5. Desconectado.

Located in front of the raft.
It represents two people taking a selfie while the tragedy unfolds behind them.

6. Cruzando el Rubicón.

35 people on their way to cross a portal in a wall, symbolizing the absurdity of borders.
The portal represents the separation between the real world and the fantasy world.

7. Jardín Hibrido.

Half-cactus, half-human sculptures.

Represents the fusion between nature and humanity.

8. Portal.

A girl with horns looking at herself in a mirror reflecting the ocean and its immensity.

9. Desregulado.

Businessmen in suits and ties playing in a playground with nothing but money on the line.

10. Photo Op.

Two photographers located in different places who represent the current need to take pictures of everything.

10. Giro Humano.

A human whirlpool made up of 200 sculptures symbolizes the fragility of human beings against the strength of the ocean.
